Intermountain Obtains New ISO Rating
A new and better insurance rating for the Intermountain Fire and Rescue Department could save some residents in that area $1,000 a year in homeowners’ insurance and allow others who have been uninsurable to get coverage.
However, Chief Coleman is afraid that the good news may be short-lived because he believes that the year-old San Diego Regional Fire Authority is "attempting to force us to cut our staffing and lower our training standards, which would jeopardize our ISO 4 rating."

New Backup Generator Arrives At Intermountain
The new backup power generator has arrived at Station 85. A diesel generator is a critical element of the fire station infrastructure, providing uninterrupted power even after the public grid fails.
On major fires such as the Witch Fire, it's almost a certainty power will be lost in rural areas and often for prolonged periods.
Intermountain's new generator is an 115hp MQ Power Whisper Watt providing up to 85 kVA of power and an integrated 24-hour fuel tank for longer running time. For more info visit MQpower.com.

Physical Agility Tests Complete
Two days of physical agility tests (PATs) are history! Intermountain saw a large turn out of qualified individuals all looking for the chance to jump into Academy 6.
Even other rural fire agencies now routinely send candidates to attend Intermountain academies. All candidates must qualify by finishing the PAT in less than 12 minutes. The PAT course saw blood, sweat and tears as everyone pushed themselves to their limits in an attempt to obtain the fastest times. The best times of the day fell in the low 6 minute range.
The PATs and interviews are now complete. Academy 6 is being finalized and the first classes are set to start sometime in March.

Academy 6 Starting Soon
Intermountain Academy 6, scheduled to begin in February 2009, could be the largest class yet with over 50 applications already received. Physical Agility Tests (PAT) and panel interviews are set to start shortly after the new year to finalize those lucky individuals who will be asked to attend.
Academy 6 will most likely be taught with the newest IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting 5th Edition with Intermountain phasing out the 4th edition materials. The next academy will be set up for success with Intermountain's highly structured curriculum blending academics and theory with hands on training.
The only question remaining is can Academy 6 live up to the high standard set by the recently graduated Academy 5? Only time will tell. To learn more about Intermountain's academy program and how you can join Click Here.
| 11.27.2008 | Intermountain Experiments with FireIce® Suppression Gel
Intermountain has been conducting ongoing trials with the new FireIce® Suppression Gel from GelTech Solutions. According to GelTech, water with FireIce® added can be used to extinguish structure fires, can be used directly on wildfires and brush fires and to establish fire breaks that aid in corralling the approaching fire. FireIce® adheres directly to the burning material to break the fire triangle by cooling and rapidly suffocating the fire. This also helps to prevent relights and reduces firefighter risk.
FireIce® is very different from a traditional foam and has many beneficial properties. To learn more about FireIce® Click Here.

Intermountain Graduates 23 From Academy 5
Hundreds of friends, families and fire fighters from other agencies filled the Charles Nunn Performing Arts Center at Olive Pierce Middle School on Saturday October 4th in Ramona to commemorate the graduating class of Intermountain Academy 5.
The academy started in early May with 30 trainees. When the smoke cleared after five months of heavy training and studying 23 capable trainees including 4 from Mt. Laguna were able to proudly call themselves "probies" (probational firefighter).
"I'm really looking forward to working shifts and continuing my training," said newly minted probationary firefighter Nicholas Swift. Swift went on to say "I'm not going to lie, I do have to say I look pretty handsome in a class B uniform too." Probationary firefighter Kimberly Page had no comment after the festivities ended, but left with one of three award axes and a smile.

Station 95 Becomes 85 and Joins SDCFA
Intermountain Fire-Rescue Department has changed station numbers as it aspires to constantly improve the level of service delivered to the community. Station 95 is now Station 85. This move comes as Intermountain now works even closer with the County of San Diego under the new San Diego County Fire Authority (SDCFA).
Part of the move includes a change in dispatch from Heartland to Monte Vista. Now Intermountain is dispatched from the same center as Cal Fire which will improve communications between the departments and could also mean additional mutual assistance on certain calls.
The move is no doubt a step forward and Chief Coleman hints that many new developments are still in the pipeline and will soon be forthcoming. Chief also reports the failure of proposition A on the November 2008 ballet should not have any lasting negative impact on the future plans of Intermountain and the SDCFA.
Along with the station number and dispatch change comes call sign changes for all apparatus at Intermountain. For all the new call signs Click Here.
