Intermountain Fire and Rescue Department was established in early 1988 by a concerned group of citizens who wanted to provide better fire protection for their community. The Intermountain Fire and Rescue Department serves an area of 125 square miles bordering Ramona, Julian, Lake Henshaw as well as Palomar Mountain. The Department serves a daily resident population of 4,000 residents and an additional 12,000 commuters due to major highways that run throughout the area.

We respond to over 300 calls for service a year - With the majority being traffic accidents and medical aids. The remainder of calls are various in nature with a large propensity for rescue and vegetation fires due to the large urban interface area.

Currently we operate 5 pieces of apparatus - One "Type I" structure engines;  one "Type  III" Wildland Engine; one "Type IV" Wildland Engine; and a medium duty rescue with a full compliment of extrication and over the side equipment.

Our station is located 8 miles outside the City of Ramona, California and is staffed on a 24 hour basis by Reserve staff.

The Department is a 100% volunteer - Even though our staff is volunteer, we strive to maintain the same service level of training, quality service and professionalism as paid fire agencies.

Intermountain Fire and Rescue Department provides Basic Life Support (BLS) - The Department provides First Responder Services with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) capability.  Transport services are provided either by neighboring agencies or Air Ambulance.
